What Goes in a SWMS

A SWMS isn't a 40-page novel and it isn't a one-line "be careful". Here are the 8 things a compliant Safe Work Method Statement actually contains - and the mistakes that get them thrown back.

1. The job and the high risk construction work

Name the task and identify WHICH of the 18 HRCW categories it triggers (fall risk over 2 m, excavation over 1.5 m, live electrical, and so on). No HRCW named = the regulator asks why the document exists; HRCW present but not named = worse.

2. The site and the context

Project, principal contractor, location, and the site-specific conditions that change the risk - it's a template until the day you write "adjacent live childcare centre, deliveries before 8am only" on it.

3. Step-by-step: hazards for each step

Break the work into its actual steps, and for each one name what can hurt someone. "Working at heights - falls" is a category, not a hazard. "Installing roof sheets near the unprotected eastern edge in wind" is a hazard.

4. The controls - in hierarchy order

For every hazard: what you're DOING about it, chosen from the top of the hierarchy down - eliminate, substitute, isolate, engineer, administrate, PPE. A SWMS where every control is "wear PPE and take care" is the fastest rejection in the industry.

5. Who implements, who monitors

Every control has a name or role attached: who puts the edge protection up, who checks the exclusion zone holds at 10am, who has authority to stop the work.

6. Plant, equipment and qualifications

The gear the task needs, its inspection state, and the tickets/VOCs the crew must hold - matched to the actual machines on site.

7. Consultation and sign-on

Written WITH the workers doing the work, not AT them - and signed by every worker before they start, plus re-signed whenever it's revised. The unsigned SWMS in the ute glovebox protects nobody.

8. Review triggers and revision control

When it gets reviewed (work changes, incident occurs, controls fail) and a revision number so everyone can tell the current version from the stale one. This is exactly what our QR verification does - scan the code, see the live revision status.
