Worried about a mate?
Trust the niggle. If a workmate isn't himself — gone quiet, snappy, turning up late, drinking harder, giving stuff away — that niggle you feel is worth acting on.
Ask him, straight. "You right, mate? You haven't seemed yourself." Ask on the walk to the ute, side by side, not face to face in front of the crew. If it's serious, ask seriously — asking about suicide doesn't put the idea there; it opens the door.
Listen more than you talk. You don't need answers. You need to not walk off.
Connect him with help. Offer to sit with him while he calls the MATES line, or walk with him to the supervisor or first aider. Don't carry it alone — and don't leave him to carry it alone either.
