Build a JSA that holds up
Most JSAs get knocked back for the same reasons: the steps are too broad, the controls are all hard hats and toolbox talks, and the residual risk column is either blank or identical to the one before it. This builds the assessment properly and then tells you where yours is weak — before somebody else does.
Questions
What is the difference between a JSA and a SWMS?
A SWMS is a specific document the WHS Regulations require for high risk construction work, with prescribed content. A JSA or job safety analysis is a general risk assessment method you can use for any task. If your work falls into one of the high risk construction work categories, a JSA does not satisfy the SWMS requirement. Our free checker tells you which category your work falls into.
Why does it warn me about administrative controls and PPE?
Because they sit at the bottom of the hierarchy of controls and rely entirely on people behaving perfectly every time. A JSA where every control is a toolbox talk, a sign and a hard hat has not actually controlled anything. The regulations expect you to work down from elimination first.
What if the residual risk is still high?
Then the controls are not adequate and the work should not proceed on that basis. That is the whole point of scoring it after the controls rather than before. Go back up the hierarchy, or change the method.
Do I have to consult workers?
Yes. Consultation with the workers who will do the task is a duty under the WHS Act, not a nicety, and it is also how you find the hazards you missed sitting in the office. Record who you spoke to.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything stays in your browser on your device. Print it or copy it as text when you are done.

One task. A real job has a thousand.
A JSA on a clipboard is only as good as the day it was written. The paid system holds two hundred trade SWMS with the QR band on every page, so the crew scans the document on the wall and gets the current version rather than the one from March.
